S. Marco

The Church of S Marco is part of a complex also including the Augustinian monastery (today home to offices). Its construction in Romanesque style dates back to 1273. Successively expanded it owes its present look to a project from 1600.

It is preceded by a portico built in Renaissance style. The interior has barrel vaults divided into six spans. The presbytery is dominated by the great nineteenth century crucifix whilst to the right the Sacred Family altar piece is to be admired, a piece of work attributed by some critics to Pietro Ricci (17th century). Noteworthy are two baroque marble altars, surmounted by a Sacred Family altar piece, the other by the statue of Mary Immaculate.

The church and the annexed monastery live their moment of glory during the Council when they host the most important theologists of the Augustinian order. To the left o f the entrance there is a baroque style fountain dedicated to S Giovanni Nepomuceno.
